VIDEO – 2 Blur App favourites

2 Blur App favourites.

Some of you who’ve been making images with your iPhones for the last decade will remember tho queen of blur apps, BlurFX. BlurFX was absolutely one of my favourite apps; a dedicated blur app for adding a really special quality, median blur effect like the ones below. There was simply  nothing else quite like it on the Apple market.

Some of you taking my Creative Mobile Artistry Course will have seen it being mentioned there but unfortunately, the app no longer exists.

It’s demise has always been a bit of a mystery to me since I hadn’t found any other app to match it’s unique soft melting blur. It seems that everyone in 2009 who was into iPhoneography had a copy of it.

The good news is that I’ve discovered a couple of apps, iColorama and Affinity Photo that almost match it. Affinity Photo is definitely a close match but it is a tad expensive for just one effect, however, the whole Affinity App has so many pro tools like Photoshop that it’s worth every penny of it’s hefty price tag.

Affinity Photo app – Fabulous median blur and packed with professional tools for artists and designer.

iColorama App – A unique app with a great selection of blur tools and packed with unusual effects. Great for kickstarting creativity.

iColorama, although, not quite up to BlurFX’s soft melting tones, has a wonderful suite of alternative blur options as well as one of the most fascinating apps to play with in general. Boasting a huge array of tools and features guaranteed to keep any experimental photo artist happy and with a low price tag, I’d recommend this to any creative iPhoneographer – and do regularly!

Here’s a quick video I made of the BlurFX alternative options offered by both Affinity Photo and iColorama so you can see yourself which one you prefer…or maybe both.

Please get in touch if you know of any great blur apps I’ve missed or that have a blur tool within them and that match good old, sadly missed BlurFX.

Hi Nicki, thanks for this post. I am a happy student of your Mobile artistry course who asked for a more in depth description of blurring on iPhone. Thanks

Hi Nicky. Thanks so much for taking the time to post this article. I will go and buy affinity photo. I don’t find iColorama’s blurring result optimally.

Hi Begitte, another student just emailed me to tell me about Art Studio Pro and she recommended the Median blur and Surface Blur. Can’t wait to try that out…and it maybe a cheaper option.
