doors of ile saint louis

Doors of Ile Saint Louis by Scott Williams

Backstory/Apps Used: My wife and I recently celebrated our wedding anniversary in Paris. We were fortunate enough to find an apartment for rent on I’le de Saint Louis. Every time we walked around or off the island my eyes were constantly drawn toward the unique and colorful doorways that graced the front of each building. Coming from America where we seem to crave our cookie-cutter homes and neighborhoods, seeing these wonderfully unique doors was a wonderful surprise.

I made it a point to snap a picture of every door on the island. At first I did so using different apps but felt that the best way to demonstrate their differences was to standardize the style of each image. Ultimately I settled on using Hipstamatic (Jane lens & W40 film) for all my images.

Once back home I really wanted to share these doors with others and felt that the most appropriate way to demonstrate just how different they are was by presenting some of them in a single image. After selecting my favorite shots, I pulled them in to Diptic paying special attention to the distribution of door style and color within the final image.

October Follows You All Year Round by Pu the Owl

Backstory/Apps Uncovered: The photo was taken on iPhone 4S with Orasis and later edited with Handy Photo, Mextures and Vscocam. It was taken in Reykjavik late in 2012, just two days before I left the country after living there for years. The toned down feeling and look matched my feelings at the time.

Apps Uncovered Friday 5 & 12 July 2013

Selected by Bob Weil

This week’s App’s Uncovered actually consists of 24 selections covering the last two weeks – Nicki and I have fallen woefully behind as we finished up book-related mattered and are hard at work on the new website (which we know you’ll love). But we could not let things fall too far behind, so here’s our favorite 24 from the last two weeks. A number of returnees and familiar names, but also a large number of newer contributors. This is the most rewarding part of this “job” – the discovery of new talent, and the maturation of long time members through consistent dedication to refining their craft.

Alium by Phoneographer

Backstory: Textured iPhoneography still life floral image. Full workflow with images at each stage at skipology.com/iphoneography-floral-workflow-allium/.

Apps used / process – ProCamera to capture. Filterstorm to crop to 1:1 ratio and resize. Snapseed to pull out detail via Drama and then add the first stage in the painterly style via Grunge. Mextures to add 4 further texture / light layers to the image. The combination was also saved as a preset for future images. A second non-textured version was created and over-exposed in PS Express and then blended with the textured version using Multiply. This added additional detail lost in earlier processes. Finally the finished image was run through Camera+ fluorescent filter which enhanced the purple tones.

Backstory: One of my favorite places in New York City is The High Line, a beautiful public park created on abandoned train tracks elevated above the city.  Like most public areas of NYC, it’s filled with people from all walks of life, including street musicians and performers.  This little toddler was completely engaged in listening and dancing to the man playing classical music.  I felt so lucky to have stumbled upon the scene and to have been able to capture the moment.

Looking up

Looking Up
by Maarten Oortwijn

Backstory: While attending the Django Reinhardt festival in Samois sur Seine, I also visited the palace of Fontainebleau. Walking in the park among beautiful old trees, I looked up and made a straight iphone picture. When back at my tent in Samois I edited the picture with Painteresque(style Lithograph) and Snapseed(for the border). The result reminded me of old Ruysdael pictures

Apps Used: Snapseed and Painteresque

Back Story:
This image was photographed at what locals commonly call “Free Zuma” but the beach is formally known as Point Dume in Malibu. I think the full quote really tells the story: “To myself I am only a child playing on the beach, while vast oceans of truth lie undiscovered before me.”
– Isaac Newton
