Title: Take a bow
Artist: Phoneographer
Backstory/Apps used: (ProCamera, Snapseed, Modern Grunge, Superimpose). My aim was to mimic a vintage manually painted feel to an old image and I did that by creating multiple masks in Superimpose from different elements of the image. They were then layered over the image using different blend methods, opacity levels, etc. There’s a link on my Flickr post to an app flow for a different image which followed the same basic process at skipology.com/iphoneography-workflow-encore/

Backstory/Apps Used: Shot on my old 3Gs using Hipstamatic Tintype Film Pak.
I recently purchased a small LED light from the local discount store for $10 which I used for a small fill. Subject, a local skateboarder, is sitting on a couch in the front window of the local skateboard shop, one of my favorite haunts. The natural light comes across his shoulder. Fill light from the LED is from the upper left.

This image was taken at the San Francisco National Cemetery at the Presidio. There are over 30,000 people buried here, mostly soldiers. It was very emotional to stand there and see the sheer numbers of headstones, dated from the mid 1800s to the 1970s. I took lots of shots, all with KitCam. This one was nice and simple. I used Snapseed tilt shift and adjusted contrast then finished with a filter in LoMob.

Forgotten Dreams

Title: Forgotten Dreams
Artist: Sarah Jarrett
Backstory/Apps Used: Dynamic Light, Superimpose, Modern Grunge, Laminar.

Forgotten dreams started life as two separate images. The Landscape in the background was taken in the Summer while walking up a steep hill adjacent to a wheat field. I really like the sloping angle and the huge white clouds. I took the separate image of the jumping figure of my daughter in the garden and put the two together in Superimpose, I created a mask of the figure by rubbing away all the unwanted background. Dynamic Light helped to tweak the lighting and I used Modern Grunge for the textures and some of my own in Superimpose.

Masks

Title: Masks
Artist: Sarah Jarrett
Backstory/Apps Used: Apps: Procreate, Superimpose, Miracam and Laminar.

I love altering and changing the face in a portrait either by distortion or using slow shutter or by the addition of a mask. Masks instantly create theatre and presence, they frame, disguise and decorate, create an emotional response. I started the self portrait in Procreate and did a lot of underpainting – reworking and dulling the eyes and building up lighter tones because I wanted a lot of white and grey in the image. I added the mask and the birds wings over the eyes like theatrical lashes in Superimpose. I often jump back and forth between these two apps. I used a Spraypainting ‘Splatter’ brush to add the white which helped to mask out the background and focus everything on the face. Final tweaks were done in Miracam and then Laminar.

Urban Isolation Part Two

Title: Urban Isolation Part Two
Artist: Mark T Simmons
Apps Used: Hipstamatic BlacKeys SuperGrain Film and Jane lens, Alt Photo Red Sensitivity B&W film and Snapseed.

This is a companion piece to an earlier shot in colour. Poplar Bridge, in East london has been the location for both pieces as it has such a lonely feel about it and in my opinion, captures the isolation that every person can experience in a big city.

For this shot I knelt down on the floor to get the pov and waited for something to happen. I consider myself very lucky the subject came along as his presence helped capture the image perfectly.

I virtually only use Hipstamatic to shoot my images and their BlacKeys SuperGrain is the best black and white film around. At the time of shooting I was heavily into retro filters from Alt Photo and used their Red Sensitivity to add to the effect . Finally, I always finish every shot I take with some tweaking in Snapseed. It’s the Lightroom for iPhoneographers.

The Embrace

Title: The Embrace
Do not believe what you hear about the darkness that travels among us. For it is this light that seduces that dark. It calls it out and embraces it. It’s kiss is so sweet and forgiving that it suffocates the darkness. It releases its embrace and this darkness falls away at our feet like roses in the spring.

Return of the light

Title: Return of the light
Artist: Sarah Jarrett
Backstory/Apps used: Dynamic Light, Modern Grunge, Shockmypic, Superimpose.

I first made the switch to mobile photography when I began long distance running. It was completely impractical to take a bulky SLR so I began to use a phone camera instead. I never looked back.

I am lucky to live in an isolated spot in the middle of open countryside and I love to observe the changing seasons across the landscape. Here it is quite flat with big skies and a mixture of open farmland, woods, marsh and fen. Return of the light refers to the real feeling that after the waning sun all winter, it begins to gain strength and return with the Spring. I loved the simple view in this picture – a small country lane lined with trees and small puddles of water but bathed in the most fantastic light. A living painting. Modern Grunge helped to add texture but I blended it with the original picture in Superimpose so that it was not so heavy and I never start work on a landscape without using Dynamic Light first.
