Tripods

The iStabilizer Flexible Leg Tripod review

I love tripods. It's not just because they're so fantastically useful for capturing steady photos and videos, they just look great..especially the little ones – like 3 legged creatures that have a life of their own…anyway I was looking for a new tripod for my iphone 4 and spotted the iStabilizer Smartphone Flexible Leg Tripod advertised online. I already own a tripod for my old 3GS which is great but you have to use the case that comes with it which is a bit smooth & slippery – not so good.

Use any case

The the big advantage of the iStabilizer case over my old tripod is that I can use my iPhone in it's own case so there's no "faffing" about changing cases or having to adopt a less preferred custom case that goes with the tripod.

The iPhone (and which ever case you own) snaps easily into the spring-loaded holder and grips the iphone reassuringly tightly. Straighten all the legs out into a regular tripod and you have a nice sturdy stand to do a bit of handhold-free editing, watch your favourite show, video or even do a bit of gaming if that's what you like.

Great flexibility

Now comes the next great feature of the iStabilizer. Not only does the upper grip allow your iPhone to do a 360 degree turn but you can twist it to bend right over into a portrait or vertical position. This obviously allows great flexibility when taking photos.

You can move the flexible legs to almost any position to get that difficult shot or wrap them around virtually any surface, including the handlebars of your bike to get a great video of your journey. (Just make sure you use a good post-processing smoothing app like Luma to straighten it out the bumps afterwards).

Use the detachable mount on your large tripod

The great features don't stop there. The quick access mount makes swapping devices in any case very easy. Capture one scene on your iPhone and switch to snap another pic on your iPod (or android, blackberry etc). You can even remove the spring-clip mount to reveal a standard 1/4 x 20" camera mount to pop on your regular digital camera. The patented removable mount can also be used on any tripod with a standard 1/4 x 20" thread.

Overall, I found this tripod to be a great product although you need to be careful, once the iPhone is clipped into the mount – there is a temptation to use the iphone to swivel your camera about in the mount and a couple of times I twisted my iPhone out of the mount trying to get a to get a good angle which resulted in the lower pad coming very slightly unstuck. (To be fair - my enthusiasm does result in a little heavy-handedness now and then).

Finally, this item is very light-weight , weighing in at a meagre 2.8 oz (0.175 lbs) and measures approximately 1.96" W x 9" H x 1.5" D (5x23x3.8cm) fitting perfectly into any small bag.
